Second Battle of Champagne, France, World War I, September 1915. French troops advancing through the German lines. Begun on the 25th of September 1915, the Second Battle of Champagne was an offensive launched by the French. Although the attack initially broke through and gained two miles of ground, the deployment of reinforcements enabled the Germans to halt the advance. By 6 November a German counter attack had recaptured all the lost ground. The battle had cost the French 145,000 casualties.
