Mahatma Gandhi visiting London for 'Round Table' conferences
Mahatma Gandhi visiting London for 'Round Table' conferences, September 1931. Mohondas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), known as Mahatma (Great Soul), was one of the leaders of the campaign for Indian independence from British rule. A lifelong believer in the principle and practice of protest by non-violent means, he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in New Delhi on 30 January 1948. He is seen with his spinning wheel, which was a symbol of his attempt to resurrect Indian trade at the expense of the British.
