Blind Hookey

Joseph Swain

Blind Hookey, 1878. Russia, Tukey and Germany are amongst those seated at the card table. John Bull, the representative of the British people, refuses to join the game. This relates to the recent Treaty of San Stefano which laid down the terms for peace between Russia and Turkey. Lord Salisbury had despatched a circular to the Powers objecting to a number of the terms of the Treaty. There was a growing distance between Russia and Britain at this time as neither side could agree on how best to proceed. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 30, 1878.
