Still Life with Shellfish and Eggs
Seventeenth century paintings of elaborate arrangements of food had a religious intention, which was to show the plentiful nature that God had created for people's enjoyment. Food displays also allowed artists to demonstrate their skill in representing many different objects, textures and reflections. Light slanting into this composition highlights the objects on the table, leaving the background as a plain backdrop. The objects include a large Chinese porcelain dish. The painting is thought to be by Georg Flegel, a German artist who trained in the Netherlands.
