View from the Convent of Camaldoli

Pietro Fabris

A bird's eye view of the islands visible from the Convent of Camaldoli: the island of Ventotiene [far right as viewed], of St Stefano [second from the right as viewed], of Ischia [centre of the plate] and of Procida [in front of Ischia]. The Lake of Agnano is visible on the left of the plate, and the crater of Astruni on the right.

Three figures are visible in the foreground, overlooking the scene. William Hamilton, dressed in a red overcoat, observes it through a telescope.

Plate 17 from Campi Phlegraei: observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies by William Hamilton. The plate is inscribed ‘XVII’ in the top left corner.
