Surrounding vignettes show animals (clockwise from top left): carrying panniers; giving rides at the seaside; being milked; used as a pack animal; being ridden; pulling a cart for a costermonger selling vegetables and donkey skin used to make whips; donkey skin used by the French for drumskins; used as pack animals in mining districts.
